The Relative Connections Experience – video transcript
This is what happens when you place an enquiry with Relative Connections to find someone missing from your life.
Jennifer Shaw:
Relative Connections has been going over 10 years now and really, Relative Connections was set up to help people who are trying to relocate missing family members or friends, just set up purely just to reunite people. From the minute somebody registers their interest with us and when they have that initial consultation, they’re giving us their whole backstory. They’re really sharing things with us that are emotional and that they may not have ever shared with even their closest family members or friends.
Sue Harrison:
It’s about reassuring them, anyway that we can find that person for them, and that when we do find that person follow them, we’re still going to be here to support them afterwards when they want to make contact.
James Thackery:
There’s no better feeling than knowing that you’ve helped change someone’s life. That’s like, what better reward than that?
David Oates:
The feeling to find somebody never goes away. That’s our experience of it, and it only grows and grows and grows. Now, the older somebody gets, the more likely they are to have passed away, so that chance to find them will only diminish with time. The thing that we can do that perhaps people might not be able to do themselves, is look at a current whereabouts of somebody. So, although they might have information, you will find it extremely difficult in this day and age, to find current whereabouts.
Jennifer Shaw:
It is a big thing. It’s emotional and it’s hard and it’s scary. But the end result is amazing.
Jennifer:
He came down to see me on the South Coast, just to talk to me about what do you want to do in life? That’s the last time I saw him. I was going down to Penzance on the train on the Monday on a holiday, and she rang me in the afternoon. Sue. She said there is only one John in Spain with the date of birth and gave me the address and the phone number. I got in the door at 10 to six. I was on the phone at six o’clock and I rang and there was no reply. There was a Spanish answer phone message.
John:
And the voice said, “John, is that you? I’m Jennifer. Call me at this number.” I thought, “Jesus, that’s my sister.” I knew it was her. I knew her voice. Her accent had changed, but I knew her voice. I phoned. It took me a while to get the courage up to phone her because the number was there. I phoned and she wasn’t at home. So, I left a voicemail message on her phone.
Jennifer:
“Jennifer, this is John. You rang me. I don’t know what it’s about,” he said, “but would you like to call me back? You’ve obviously got my number.” I did. I called him back within 10 minutes and I knew it was my brother.
John:
I rang the doorbell and she opened the door and there she was. I just stood, looking at her and we hugged each other, and hugged each other for a long time. That was so wonderful.
Jennifer:
We’re like that now.
John:
The feeling of being together again, and it’s exactly the same as it was 40 years ago. Perhaps if she’d gone through someone else, she wouldn’t have been able to get there, but Relative Connectionss has done a wonderful job.
Jennifer:
Magical role, Relative Connections. Whoever started it had a very good heart.
John:
I never thought I’d reach this day.
Jennifer:
My soul is full.
Kevin:
Because I was at work, when I had the initial phone call from Philippa, Phillip shared that she didn’t want to speak to me at work because it was emotional, but she spoke to my wife. Then, when I got home, my wife sat me down, turned the telly off, which was unusual and said, “they found her.” With that, I just looked at the coffee table and just burst into tears. The point was that they were so, so caring. It wasn’t just another job to them. They were on your side. It really was full of compassion. I then first met my Mum on the following Sunday and I’ve just been on cloud nine.
Angela:
The jigsaw puzzle is made up. It made my life complete, and I know I made his life complete. I mean, Relative Connections, without them, I wouldn’t have got my son.
Kevin:
Without Relative Connections, I wouldn’t have found my Mum.
Andrea:
Now, having such a great relationship with him and knowing where I’ve come from, it’s filled what hole I had in my life. It’s actually filled that, and I actually feel, I always say at complete, but I do feel complete. It’s nice to now have a very good relationship with him. He’s made such a difference in my life.
Speaker 11:
Yeah.
Andrea:
He really has. I can’t thank you guys enough because of that, because I can’t imagine my life without him now.
