I want to find my Biological Father is something I can help you to do.
My name is David Oates, I’m the Head Researcher here at Relative Connections, you can view my LinkedIn profile here.
I am also the director of an Ofsted registered adoption support agency.
This week we have a really amazing story for you about someone who wanted to find their biological father. Imagine being brought up by your parents, only to find out by chance that you were adopted!
This is an amazing story of coincidence and luck, whether that luck was good or bad we’ll let you decide. We’d like to thank Mr Humm for his story and the photograph of him and his Dad and we’d like to wish them all the best for the future.
Hopefully this story highlights, through the words of someone who has been in your shoes just what we can do for you if you trust us.
Over to you Mr Humm…
“At the age of 44 I was getting married I couldn’t locate my birth certificate I only ever had a short one, so I sent away for a replacement. Rather than get my certificate through the post as I expected, I instead received a call to say that my birth details couldn’t be located and after double checking they couldn’t find any trace of me. There was someone similar with all the same details as me but a different surname and could I be adopted?. I thought this was ludicrous after all, I had grown up with both parents and they are still around but amazingly the General Registers Office confirmed I was in fact adopted. As you can imagine this led to some very emotionally charged conversations with my parents. But I knew I wanted to find my biological father.
So a few weeks later with very limited info myself and my fiancée set about finding my biological father. After a few weeks we came up with nothing. We saw a story about Relative Connections on the Internet and they sounded like they could help me. I rang up and gave them the very limited details I had and with little hope of hearing anything, I resigned myself to the fact we had done all we could. A week later we were amazed when we received a call saying they had located my uncle living in Essex. So we wrote him a long letter explaining who we were and asked if he could help. 2 days later my now wife had a call saying the letter was received by a gentleman who confirmed that Relative Connections were correct and he was my uncle. He told me my father had emigrated to Australia 40 years ago but returned to the UK every 3 years to visit family. Amazingly our letter arrived the day after he had landed in the UK to stay with my uncle!!!.
A few days later me, my pregnant wife and my 3 year old daughter went to Essex for a few days and met my father and some other family. (The photos are from our first meeting in Chelmsford) It went really well and we promised to stay in touch.
I want to find my biological father
The expert research team at Relative Connections were fantastic and I was constantly kept informed. I was grateful for the empathy shown to me in what was a very difficult situation. They talked through all my options and I was totally confident, being guided by them.
Since our initial meeting I have constant contact with my father. I have spoken with my half-brother and half-sister and their families too. John (my father) came to stay with us last year to meet my newborn son and we spent good quality time together. I am saving as best I can as I want to meet my siblings and their families while my dad is still around as he suffers with poor health now. The outcome for me was fantastic I could never have done it without Relative Connections and I am very grateful for the great job they did for me”
